Making Spirits Bright: Holiday Looks and GIVEAWAY

Christmas is just over a week away, and all I want to do for the next week and a bit is wear sparkly things, sing carols, and eat gingersnap cookies. Even though I live in Winnipeg (aka Winterpeg), where it can easily reach -40°C with the windchill. Yup, if -30°C wasn't cold enough just tack on another -10°C of freezing wind. I still absolutely love this time of year - especially all the hype right before Christmas and it's the perfect time to make spirits bright.

To me Christmas is all about being with the ones you care about the most, and spreading a little bit more cheer than usual. And one way to do this is by gathering all your friends and family together for a holiday party!

When it comes to holiday parties, I just love finding a special outfit for a festive occasion. And to help me show some outfit options, I enlisted the help of my best friend, Casey. Take a look at our holiday looks below.

Glittery Smokey Brown Eye

My most recent obsession is glitter, but more specifically glittery eyeshadow. For the longest time I really only used matte and the odd shimmer here and there. But right now I'm all about the glitter. I'm really not sure what had sparked this sudden obsession, but it may very well be the fact I'm in the Christmas spirit. *Cue Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas*

Favourite Fall Pieces

It's been very fallish here in Winnipeg, it's November 19, and it's yet to snow. Crazy? Yup, I know. Today I'm sharing with you one of my go-to fall looks. It's simple, comfortable, and perfect for when you're out and about.

How I Curl My Hair (Medium Length Hair)

About a month ago I cut my (fairly) long hair to my shoulders and I've been absolutely loving it. The only problem I was having was when it came to curling my hair. I'm not the biggest fan of curling irons, and my straightener just wasn't doing the trick anymore. My hair stylist suggested to invest in a wand and that's exactly what I did. And let me tell you it's change my hair game.

Here's how I curl my hair.

Five Beauty Trends to Rock this Fall

It’s finally September, which means that fall has ‘unofficially’ started. It’s time to pull out all your cozy sweaters, eat and drink everything pumpkin flavoured, and burn your favourite fall candle.

My favourite part of this time of the year though is makeup. You will definitely see me sporting my darkest plum lip on a daily basis – and slightly regretting it after biting into a salted caramel donut.

Fall 2016 beauty is bringing back a twist on the classics, as well as some new trends. I’ve complied the top looks I’ve found from the likes of  Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar to bring you five beauty trends to try this Fall.

Get Ready With Me: Glam

Hello everyone! Today I have a post that I'm really excited to share with you all. I absolutely love it when I get to get all dressed up and glam. This look is really soft, pinky, and romantic. It's great for any dressy occasion. Follow along as I glam it up!

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Collection & Swatches

Ahhh matte lips. One of the hottest makeup trends of 2016. I have to say I've been in love with matte lips ever since I tried my very first NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream a couple years ago. These little magical bottles of liquid lip stick are the best choice (in my opinion) for anyone looking to collect a wide range of matte liquid lipsticks.

I've been collecting these lip creams for a while now. Not only are they incredibly affordable ($6 - $9), but they are not drying at all! They glide on so creamy with their soft applicator and last for hours - another bonus. Today I have swatched the 10 lip cream colours I have and which ones are my favourite.

Mermaid Summertime Makeup

It's July and summer is definitely in full swing. Sandy beach days and carefree music festivals are what it's all about. Inspired by my favourite mythical (maybe real?) creature, mermaids. I have a fun, bright, easy-wearing mermaid makeup look that's perfect for a music festival or just any summer day really.

2016 Summer Staples

Summer is officially here and that means it's time for sun-kissed skin, sandals, and coconut scented EVERYTHING. Today I'm brining you my five favourite beauty and fashion staples for summer 2016. This summer I've been trying really hard to stay away from black and widening my summer colour palette - neutrals count too right? These items are ones I've been using a lot lately and have basically confirmed that they will be around all summer long.

Shorts for Going Out

I've been absolutely loving wearing cute heels with shorts. It's one of my favourite go-to outfits for going out. Today's look is one that I think would be great for any night out. It's dressy, yet casual and super comfortable which is always a bonus.

'22' Makeup Tutorial

Hey everyone! Okay, I'm feeling pretty bad right now, the last time I posted was twenty days ago on April 30 (SO SORRY!). If you follow me on Instagram and Twitter than you might have seen that I was in Chicago for a week with my fellow classmates, it was my last time being with them before we all graduate and I had a blast. But, because of that I fell into vacation mode and lost my posting rhythm. I'm hoping that now I've posted finally that will all change and I will be back to posting weekly.

Anyways, let's move on. Today I'm going to be showing you a step-by-step makeup tutorial that is centred on Kylie Jenner's Lip Kit in the colour 22. This gorgeous rustic orange shade is so perfect for all year round, but today I focused on a light and airy spring/summer look. Side note: I'm also turning 22 at the end of the month so I feel like this may very well be my birthday makeup too.

On to the look!

Sparkle: Hillberg & Berk Mother's Day Giveaway

*Giveaway is now closed. The winner is Nikk B! Congrats and thank you to all who entered!

Whether you're celebrating your mom or a motherly figure in your life, Mother's Day is just around the corner. And in lieu of that I have a very special post for you today that is near and dear to my heart. If you've read my first post or my 'Meet V' page then you know that my mom was my biggest influence and she is who I credit my love for fashion and beauty too, among many many other things. Unless you know me personally you may not know, but my mom passed away when I was 17 from a very short battle with cancer.

Losing my mom was the hardest thing I've ever gone through. But I am extremely thankful to have so many people that helped me stay strong and continue to do the things I love, and I owe so much to them (you all know who you are). But the person I owe the most credit to is my mom. Her determination, passion, and sparkle during her life is what reminds me to have that same outlook. Even though I now celebrate Mother's Day a bit differently than others, I want to share the sparkle with you and your mom, or motherly figure. Because it really does start with mom.

Making a Statement in Red

The sun was shining and it definitely was feeling like spring last week. With the help of Ricki's, I'm going to show you how I style Ricki's Colour of the Moment: RED. Now, I know red isn't typically a spring colour, but with the right complimentary pieces you can easily take this colour from season to season. To me, red is the perfect colour to make a statement with.

This classic red blazer from Ricki's is a great staple item that you can wear all year round, just by changing up what you wear with it. My tips for spring is to keep the rest of your outfit light and neutral. White, beige, and light blue jeans are what I chose to work with. Another tip is to mix your metals! The silver details of the blazer and my watch, are fun contrast against the gold in my shoes, the shirt, and my necklace.

Hair Time: CZE by Tania Hot Hair Oil Masque

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to win the CZE by Tania giveaway on Tannis Miller Create. CZE by Tania is a Winnipeg-based, all-natural hot hair oil masque product. When I found out I won, I was so excited to try out Tania's product. You see about a month ago I ombr├ęd my hair, and I'm totally loving it, but like most people who add bleach to their hair, mine was feeling fairly dry on the ends. So when I got my hands on Tania's hot hair oil masque I was ecstatic.

I had the chance to ask Tania some question about herself and CZE by Tania. Here's what she said.

tarte Rainforest of the Sea Cleanser & Moisturizer Review

A few weeks ago I was browsing Sephora for the second time that week when I came across a new tarte display. The purple and blue colours with the gold accents caught my attention. And once I realized that the theme of this collection was the sea, I was hooked. See, my favourite movie since I was three years old has been The Little Mermaid. Growing up I declared Prince Eric as my first crush at age four, and by age six I thought I was going to be a mermaid when I'd grow up. Fast forward 15 years and I'm still obsessed with anything that is "mermaid" related.

Nails, Nails, Nails

Some of you may know this, but if you saw this blog post or follow me on my social media accounts then you probably know about my nail blog. If not, I thought I'd get you up to speed. The Trendy Nail Files is a nail blog I started back in September of 2015.

Get Ready Quickly with an Instant Outfit

For me getting ready in the morning is something that I'm not totally in love with. I tend to hit that snooze button more times than I'd like to admit. That's why I'll try any little (or big) trick to help me save time while getting ready in the morning.

Today's post is one I'm super excited about. I've teamed up with Ricki's to show you how I would get ready wearing three of Ricki's new Instant Outfit pieces. So what's an Instant Outfit? Well it's simple. Ricki's has just launched a new line of office appropriate clothing that is perfect for spring. The idea is built from three key pieces, a top, cover-up, and bottoms. All 17 pieces from the collection can be mix and matched to create different easy, quick, and stylish ensembles. Basically, it'll take you no more than two minutes to put together a gorgeous outfit.

What's Inside My Bag?

Some of my favourite posts to read or YouTube videos to watch are the 'Whats in My Bag?' ones. I feel like you can learn a lot about a person from these posts/videos. So today I decided to do one of those posts. These are the items I find essential to carry around on a day-to-day basis.

Quick Everyday Makeup Tutorial

My everyday makeup routine changes, well daily. I don't usually stick to a single look, I like to change it up all the time. But for this post I'm showing you my quick everyday look that I do when I'm in a rush. You can literally do this in under ten minutes.

MAC Lipstick Collection & Swatches

Lipstick has always been my favourite makeup product. It's the one beauty item that can completely transform any makeup look. My obsession with lipstick has become a bit crazy. Last time I counted I had over 60 lipsticks. Yes, I know that's a ridiculous number. I can't help it – I'm addicted.

It wasn't until last year though that I finally got on the MAC lipstick bandwagon. And looking back, I seriously question why I didn't hope on sooner. Although it's on the pricer side for lipsticks, MAC lipsticks have one of the most amazing formulas and the best colour selection.

My little MAC collection consists of nine colours in four different finishes: cremesheen, satin, matte, and retro matte.

Why You Should Start a Blog & Tips

When you search beauty or fashion blog on the Internet there is no shortage of them. With thousands and thousands of blogs – many of tremendous quality – it can be a bit daunting to actually start one.

Personally I've been reading blogs for over five years now and still love it. I love grabbing a good cup of coffee and catching up on my favourite blogs.

But when it came to starting my own blog it took a little leap of faith. The Trendy Files just had its six month anniversary this month, and I'm extremely proud and happy of the content I've created and the growth of my little blog.

Cool Tones for Cold Days

Happy 2016! If you don't follow me on social media (@TheTrendyFiles) then I haven't had a chance to wish you a happy new year. For my first post of 2016 I put together a simple, but stylish winter ensemble complete with one of this season's hottest items - the blanket scarf.
